(More customer reviews)I thought I knew Max well. We both worked for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. However, there were many things about Max, the man, and Max, the crusader for general aviation, that I didn't know until I read this facinating book. Anyone who loves to fly, should read Max's story and be thankful that the "Curmudgeon of Aviation" did battle for so many years to make it possible for them to enjoy the "freedom of flight." Max didn't do it alone, of course, he had AOPA, its staff and legions of members behind him, but perhaps more than any other individual he represented the spirit of general aviation in its formative years. Max's early life was largely unknown to me before I read this book, and I found the descriptions of some of his adventures in the air entertaining reading.

The legendary Max Karant, fighter for the rights of private pilots, aviator, and founding editor of AOPA Pilot, lived a colorful and eventful life. This memoir weaves together his fascinating flight tales with stories of his fights on the ground against the big airlines and Congress and the FAA, always championing the rights of the "little guy," the private pilot, to use the airspace and landing fields. This vivid account of the characters and controversies in aviation in the 1940s through the 1970s is both inspiration and warningNto work to preserve the freedoms we now enjoy.
